She Stands in Splendor

She Stands in Splendor

This is something I wrote years ago about a home I once lived across the street from.  I loved it so much. It remained empty for many years.  It was a beautiful, huge, old, white Victorian home with a wrap around porch and sat on several acres.  The story behind the house dated it back to the Civil War days and was used by soldiers.  It looked like a post card especially with each new change of season.  One day, as a blanket of snow covered the ground and the earth seemed so silent, I sat and wrote this while I was gazing at the house.  It was such an awesome view with the snow all around.  I could just imagine what it had been like at one time a century ago with laughter and children playing in its halls.  Behind the house was even a detached carriage shed, an old barn and old well.  There was just something so peaceful about it.

She Stands in Splendor

By-Crickettt

She stands in quiet splendor

While a blanket of white surrounds her boundaries.

No movement is seen either inside or out

Yet, I behold her beauty as a picture once taken in time.

So old is her foundation and for many years she has seen

The changing of times gone by.

Her walls have comforted many faces

And have given warmth to distant strangers.

Those who pass by are amazed

As they gaze at her unique grandeur.

Once, laughter and tears filled her chambers

But now, silence is her only friend.

She has become weathered but, still remains strong.

Tall, majestic trees extend their limbs upward

Creating a shelter of shade as if wanting to protect her.

They too, have stood through the ages of time

And surpassed the many storms of yesteryear.

Immaculate are the carvings inside and out which make up her uniqueness.

Lifelessness does not overshadow what is seen.

Her beauty and grace so eloquently displayed

Creates within the imagination, the lives that once were a part of her memories.

She sleeps alone in darkness now

And footsteps no longer find their way through her entrance.

But she is not forgotten for her beauty lives on.

And I will never forget the days I spent in distant wonder of her.
